Sporting Trivia: How many stadiums are there in the world? Which countries have the most?

A quick one for all the pub quiz fans out there, or those that are just into stats on stadiums.

We compiled a world map showing the number of stadiums in each country in the World, and picked out some fun stats.

The number of stadiums in the USA can be in part explained by the number of college and high school stadiums, which is unique to American sporting culture. The Allegient Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League, is below!

Quite why Brazil has such a gargantuan number of stadiums is a bit of a mystery, and The Sporting Blog will be doing more research to find out why. Possibly the country’s love for football has led to stadia being built in every town and city? In any case, there are a lot, and it is of course home to one of the most famous of all, The Maracana.

We wrote a very, very detailed piece on all 64 Italian Football Stadiums and have begun profiling famous stadiums from around the world, including the imposing, historic San Siro!

The UK has some of the world’s oldest stadiums - including Sandygate, which actually made it into the Guinness World Record book as the oldest football ground in the world.

Which countries have the fewest stadiums?

There are obviously many small island countries that only have one stadium, including Samoa, Haiti, Macau and the Maldives.

A surprising stat from the bottom of the list is that Lithuania, a country of 2.7m people only has 2 stadiums, compared to neighbouring Poland, which has 58.

The UAE has 3 more stadiums than Uruguay and Qatar has 3 more stadiums than Kenya, a country with 48 million MORE people living in it.

In terms of wealth disparity. The principality of Monaco only has one stadium and a GDP per person of $185,741 compared to 179 stadiums in India and a GDP per person of $2,009.
